This project crossing cultural barriers was born in 2001 and was managed by the world-famous, French electro-techno band Daft Punk and Leiji Matsumoto. That unexpected collaboration started when Daft Punk requested the design of the Albator series (the French name of the Captain Harlock series) which they admired for the video clips of "One More Time", "Aerodynamic", "Digital Love" and "Harder Better Faster", the 4 singles from their 2001 album "Discovery".
The four clips are arranged to make up a whole story. This project resulted in "Interstella 5555", a huge SF drama compiling the 4 singles and animation for the other songs of the album.
As a music clip of the 14 tracks available on "Discovery", there is only music and no dialogue.
Many fans from Japan, France and the rest of the world have enjoyed the wonderful blending of the world of Matsumoto's works and the music of Daft Punk.
The movie was released in France on May 28, 2003 and in Japan on July 27, 2003.
Planet Discovery, outside the Solar System. The famous rock band "the Crescendolls" perform live in a dome-shaped theater, on that planet inhabited by blue-skinned people. The band consists of Octave on keyboards, Stella on bass, Arpegius on guitar and Baryl on drums. Everybody is befuddled with the music, even the soldiers charged with the planet's protection.
In the meantime an unknown spacecraft gets closer and closer to the planet and releases a series of small shuttles bound to land. A mysterious commando invades the scene, abducts the whole band and fly back to space. A young man picks up an SOS sent by the defence troops of the planet. He is a great fan of Stella, the girl in "the Crescendolls. Steering a guitar-shaped spaceship, he chases after the mysterious spacecraft. After suffering much damage, he tracks it down to the Earth.
In order to become band number 1 on Earth, the 4 members have their skin colors changed and their memories remodeled.
