Explanation

“Uchû Senkan Yamato II Yamato yo Eien Nare!” was broadcast on October 6, 1979, in the “Dôyô Special” (Saturday Special) time slot from 7:00 PM to 8:54 PM on Japanese channel Nippon Television. This special program is a compilation of the TV series “Uchû Senkan Yamato 2” (Space Battleship Yamato 2) and had a total runtime of 96 minutes and 43 seconds. It was supervised by Eiichi Yamamoto, with some parts re-dubbed and new background music added.

While “Uchû Senkan Yamato 2” used the Arabic numeral “2” to make it easier for children to understand, the Roman numeral “II” was used for this version to indicate a difference. This compilation was created as a digest version of the TV series to connect the story from “Saraba Uchû Senkan Yamato Ai no Senshi-tachi” (Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato, released in August 1978) to “Uchû Senkan Yamato Aratanaru Tabidachi” (Yamato: The New Voyage, TV special aired on July 31, 1979).

Just before the release of “Uchû Senkan Yamato Kanketsuhen” (Final Yamato), on January 3, 1983, a shortened 84-minute version of this compilation was rebroadcast in Yomiuri Television's “Oshôgatsu Meisaku Eiga” (Year-End Famous Movies) slot. Furthermore, when it was broadcast on local stations and independent UHF stations in the late 1980s to 1990s, an even shorter 77-minute version was used.

In January 1985, when the videotape was released by Nippon Columbia, it was retitled to “Uchû Senkan Yamato 2 Sôshûhen.” To coincide with this, a 90-minute and 20-second version was rebroadcast on Fuji Television's “Toshiwasure Eiga Gekijô” (Year-End Movies) slot on December 25, 1984, as a tie-up. On this occasion, the title screen was also changed to “Uchû Senkan Yamato 2,” and the ending with Yamato's return and the credit roll were also altered.

Later, using Nippon Columbia's video master, Shochiku re-released it on videotape, and Sohbi Entertainment re-released it on LaserDisc, both on October 21, 1994, as “Uchû Senkan Yamato 2 Sôshûhen.”

The “Uchû Senkan Yamato 2 Sôshûhen” included as a special feature on the Japanese DVD-box is from a video master for a 1 hour and 55 minute rebroadcast program in existence at Tohokushinsha, which is a shortened version of 94 minutes and 53 seconds, 1 minute and 50 seconds shorter than the original 96 minutes and 43 seconds.
